3 Killed as Mob Burns Indonesian Parliament Building

In the province capital of Indonesia, a local parliament building was set on fire by an enraged mob, resulting in at least three fatalities and five injuries, according to officials. The fire started late on Friday in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province. The provincial council building was said to have caught fire overnight, turning the surrounding landscape a spooky shade of orange. According to local disaster official Fadli Tahar, three bodies were recovered by rescuers on Saturday morning, while five individuals who had jumped from the structure were sent to the hospital with burns or broken bones.
A regional parliament in Bandung, West Java, was also set on fire by protesters on Friday; however, no one was hurt. Demonstrators destroyed fences and set cars on fire before storming the regional police headquarters in Surabaya, the second-largest city in Indonesia. Despite the use of water cannons and tear gas by security officers, protesters retaliated with wooden clubs and pyrotechnics.
The US, Australia, and Southeast Asian nations have all had their embassies in Jakarta warn their people to stay away from protest sites and sizable public gatherings. As officials cleared burned-out automobiles, police stations, and bus shelters that irate demonstrators had set on fire, the capital of Indonesia saw a significant return to calm on Saturday.
