The Conference Between Xi and Trump is Centered on Business ties, While the Chinese Leader Warns Taiwan

On Thursday, Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump began an important series of meetings in Beijing as part of a two-day US-China summit with the primary objective being stability in the relationship.

The leaders’ meeting ended Thursday morning after almost two hours, according to the White House and Chinese official media. Following a final private meeting with Xi, Trump is anticipated to depart just after noon on Friday. However, little progress is anticipated on contentious subjects like Taiwan, trade, technology, and the Iran War.

To resolve their disagreements and prevent a recurrence of the trade war sparked by Trump’s tariff increases last year, Trump intends to focus the summit discussions on trade and on agreements for China to purchase more agricultural goods and passenger jets.

Xi assured Trump during their private meeting that US-China relations “will enjoy overall stability” if Taiwan is handled properly. According to China’s official Xinhua News Agency, Xi stated that if they don’t, the two nations run the risk of “clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy. Taiwan is a self-governing island that Beijing claims as its own territory. In December, Trump approved a $11 billion arms deal for Taiwan. Delivery has not yet been advanced by the United States.
