Following President Vladimir Putin’s promise of revenge for strikes in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine, Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on Kyiv early on Sunday, killing one person and injuring twenty-one, according to authorities.
In the early hours of the morning, AFP correspondents reported hearing several rounds of loud explosions in the Ukrainian capital. The chief of the regional military administration, Mykola Kalashnyk, stated, “The Kyiv region is once again undergoing a mass enemy attack with strike drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles tonight.”
According to AFP reporters, dozens of people sought refuge at an underground metro station in the city center after the explosions shook a residential building close to the government sector.
Authorities in the city warned that fires had started, and Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that at least 21 people had been injured, three of them in critical condition, and one person had died. As a result, residents were told to remain in shelters.
Following Russia’s declaration that it will “punish” those responsible for lethal strikes in a region of eastern Ukraine under its control, Ukrainian authorities and the US embassy had earlier warned of a potential major attack on Kyiv.
