The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed off on a five-year plan to develop its soft mobility network across the emirate, which could make it easier for Dubai residents to walk, cycle or use e-scooters. The project will create soft mobility infrastructure in 25 residential neighborhoods and improve the surroundings of 63 public transport stations by 2030, making first and last mile journeys safer and more convenient. Metro and bus stations will also be improved with wider footpaths, cycling tracks, shaded walkways, safer crossings, bicycle parking and pick-up and drop-off facilities.
The project seeks to promote public transport for a larger number of residents by facilitating the first and last mile without the use of private vehicles,” the RTA said. The council claimed the need for alternate means of transport was reflected with 342 million pedestrian journeys, 57.3 million bicycle trips and 39.6 million e-scooter trips in 2025.
The initiative comes within the framework of RTA’s efforts to enhance Dubai’s position as one of the best cities in the world to live in by developing an integrated and sustainable transport network that is commensurate with the rapid urban growth of the emirate,” said Mattar Al Tayer, director-general, chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA.
