The MSC MARIELLA, one of the biggest container ships in the world with a capacity of 24,346 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), has arrived at Khorfakkan Port, which is a member of the Sharjah Ports, Customs and Free Zones Authority. The ultra-large container vessel (ULCV), which is operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), is approximately 400 meters long and more than 61 meters wide.
Its arrival demonstrates Khorfakkan Port’s capacity to handle the newest generation of mega container ships and satisfy their logistical and operational needs. Due to its advantageous location on the eastern coast of the United Arab Emirates, the port has easy access to both the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. It is also near important international shipping lanes that connect Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, the Arabian Gulf, East Africa, and international markets.
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council and the ruler of Sharjah, has promoted infrastructural and economic development throughout Khorfakkan and the Eastern Region, and this arrival represents his development ambition.
The container terminal at Khorfakkan Port is run by Gulftainer and features six berths that span about 1,880 meters, a draught of up to 16 meters, and eighteen ship-to-shore container cranes. With growth plans targeting 5 million TEUs, then 7 million, and finally 10 million TEUs, the terminal currently has an annual capacity of 3.5 million TEUs.
