In accordance with President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s orders, the United Arab Emirates, via the UAE Aid Agency, has set aside $8 million to help the friendly Republic of Chad deal with the El Niño climate phenomenon and its humanitarian consequences, which have made food security issues worse and increased the likelihood of hunger and malnutrition.
In this regard, Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, reaffirmed the UAE’s ongoing global role in responding to natural disasters and humanitarian crises brought on by climate-related phenomena and assisting the most vulnerable communities in enhancing their capacity to deal with their consequences, especially those pertaining to food insecurity, hunger, malnutrition, and diminishing livelihoods.
He clarified that extreme climate phenomena worsen humanitarian crises and directly affect agricultural output, food supply, and livelihoods. These phenomena include rising temperatures, altered rainfall patterns, and water scarcity. According to him, this calls for coordinated solutions that include addressing pressing humanitarian issues, preventing famine and malnutrition, and enhancing the resilience and ability for recovery of impacted populations.
According to Al Ameri, the UAE’s response in Chad would focus on promoting food security and supporting the most affected and vulnerable populations, with special attention to those most at risk of starvation and malnutrition. This will increase communities’ capacity to resist the consequences of climate-related disasters and help generate a durable humanitarian impact that goes beyond addressing immediate needs.
