The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen claimed to have destroyed Houthi targets on the Red Sea coast, while the Iran-backed Houthis claimed to have struck Riyadh’s international airport, an oil refinery, and other sites in Saudi Arabia on Monday.
Riyadh and its Yemeni government allies have initiated an ambitious effort to reclaim all territory held by the group, and in response to weeks of Houthi attacks, Pakistan and Turkey have committed to deploying troops to Saudi Arabia under a new mutual defence treaty.
In recent weeks, the conflict in Yemen has become the most active front in the Middle East war, displacing over 184,000 individuals and further escalating the conflict that has encompassed the broader region, according to the United Nations.
In Yemen’s deadliest combat in years, the Houthis seized swathes of coastline along the Red Sea and key Bab Al Mandab Strait last month, despite previously controlling much of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa and the western city of Hodeida.
Since Yemen’s civil war resurfaced, the Houthis have also launched attacks on Saudi Arabia’s neighbouring country and have implemented a maritime blockade on its vessels. The Saudi-led coalition, which is supporting the internationally recognised government, reported that 100 warplanes conducted sorties at dawn, while the Yemeni military claimed to have conducted over 1,000 strikes and initiated an offensive against Sanaa.
