Why Elon Musk is Challenging The Richest Guy in India Over Starlink

Elon Musk has questioned whether billionaire Mukesh Ambani is the “real boss of India” in light of his satellite internet startup Starlink’s difficulties obtaining final license to launch in the nation.

The statement was made one day after Musk claimed that unidentified, influential corporations were attempting to prevent Starlink from entering India. Then he specifically targeted Ambani, whose Reliance group is the owner of Jio, the largest mobile network provider in India.

India has denied Musk’s accusations, claiming that its laws governing satellite communications are impartial and nondiscriminatory. Ambani and Reliance Group have not responded to Musk’s comments. They have been contacted by the BBC for comment.

With Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel getting ready to start services, the dispute arises as competition in India’s satellite internet industry intensifies. Starlink’s partnerships with Ambani’s Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel further complicate the rivalry.

Both businesses and SpaceX inked contracts in March 2025 to distribute Starlink services and equipment in India, pending government permission. Additionally, the corporations mentioned that they might look into sharing network infrastructure. Bharti Airtel has also been contacted by the BBC for comment.
