Saudi Arabia reported that strikes on Riyadh’s international airport on Thursday resulted in the deaths of three persons, including an airline pilot. Yemen’s Houthis claimed to have carried out a number of attacks against the airport. Two missile strikes on the Saudi capital’s airport and a Saudia Airlines plane there on Thursday “resulted in the martyrdom of three citizens,” according to the Saudi civil aviation authority.
The national flag airline reported on Friday that Hamoud Ali Alkalthami, the plane’s captain, had died in an incident at King Khalid International Airport. It expressed “profound sadness” and “heartfelt condolences,” and it said it cherished “his memory with deep respect and appreciation.”
As explosions reverberated around the city, the missile strikes on Thursday led international schools to take precautions and diplomats stationed in the Saudi capital to take cover. King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh saw numerous aircraft delays or cancellations, and the airport warned passengers of the “necessity” to get in touch with airlines before to their travels.
Additionally, the kingdom’s civil defence ministry reported that “interception debris” had caused damage to a medical facility and a kindergarten in Riyadh. It did not specify the extent of the damage or whether anyone was injured. It is not common for Saudi authorities to acknowledge that civilian targets have been attacked. In recent weeks, there have been few remarks regarding Houthi strikes.
