Breast Cancer Awareness Should Extend Beyond the Month of October

Although it remains pertinent that breast cancer awareness and its challenges have a dedicated month annually, discussions ought to persist, as asserted by three out of four women. Among the four, Marjorie Sac, a Philippine-registered nurse who transitioned to business in Abu Dhabi, emphasised that fear—previously a significant barrier, as noted by medical experts, to the essential widespread dissemination of accurate information, including the latest available treatments—can be viewed positively.

The breast cancer survivor featured in a 2007 episode, with Clarise Pabello and Myla Ignacio Cudilla, acknowledged that fear, courage, optimism, and empowerment come to mind during discussions about breast cancer.

Amal Bint Mubarak holds a different perspective: “It is currently manageable and not a fatal diagnosis.” ‘Cancer’ is a daunting term as it profoundly impacts not just the individual diagnosed, but also their family and cherished ones,” Sac explained.

Sac derived her insight from 18 years of experience in her own country, which encompasses two years as a nurse assistant and a decade as a laboratory manager in the capital: “Numerous women and men have confronted breast cancer with remarkable resilience.” She advocates for perpetual dialogues around breast cancer that encompass many ages, ethnicities, socio-economic strata, and other identities.
