One Civilian is Killed and Injured by Afghan Taliban Mortar fire 5 in a Border Conflict with Pakistan

A civilian was killed and five others were injured when Afghan Taliban fighters opened fire on a former Pakistani Taliban bastion in unstable northwest Pakistan early on Wednesday, according to a Pakistani government official.

According to a local government administrator on X, the shelling damaged stores in a bazaar in South Waziristan, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghan border. According to him, Pakistani troops were reacting “effectively and heavily” along the border. Kabul did not immediately respond, and it was unclear what set off the gunfight. The conflict occurred a few days after Islamabad called on Kabul to take concrete action against militants it believes are using Afghan territory to threaten Pakistan.

Faisal Karim Kundi, the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, denounced what he called unwarranted attacks by the Afghan Taliban on civilian residences and the Angoor Adda bazaar in Lower South Waziristan. He claimed the province has given up thousands of lives in the battle against terrorism and commended the Pakistani military’s reaction. In a statement, Kundi declared, “Pakistan will never tolerate attacks on its people or violations of its sovereignty. Following several border skirmishes and Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan this year, tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have increased, intensifying a long-running conflict over militant activity.
