Tens of Thousands of Indians are Evacuated as a Cyclone Arnab Strikes the State of Andhra Pradesh

Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from vulnerable coastal districts in the eastern state of Andhra Pradesh one day before Cyclone Arnab made landfall in the early hours of Wednesday, according to officials. The head of the state’s disaster management body, Prakhar Jain, stated that although the cyclone had somewhat weakened prior to landfall, it still caused heavy to extremely high rains in a number of coastal districts, causing extensive disruption in the impacted areas.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the landfall process was over, and the cyclone would continue to cause strong gusts and heavy rainfall in regions of southern Odisha state and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

According to an IMD update, Cyclone Arnab weakened to a “severe” cyclonic storm on Wednesday. As the storm strengthened over the Bay of Bengal and headed toward an earlier-than-expected impact, Cyclone Arnab’s outer bands began battering parts of the Andhra Pradesh coast late Tuesday, officials at the state’s disaster management authority said.

Before it made landfall, authorities started evacuating residents from low-lying and flood-prone areas and put all of the state’s coastal districts on high alert on Tuesday. Additionally, several train services were cancelled because areas of the coast were already being battered by strong gusts and heavy rain, according to officials. An official announcement states that at least 89,000 people have been evacuated from Andhra Pradesh thus far.
