UAE Commemorates Historic Achievement as Barakah Plant Unit 4 Starts up for Business

According to a historic announcement made by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) for the United Arab Emirates, today, the fourth unit of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant began commercial operations, signifying its full delivery.

By doing this, ENEC delivers on its pledge to supply the UAE with abundant, clean electricity. Barakah is a noteworthy accomplishment for the country and a remarkable feat of engineering and teamwork. It is one of the most successful new build nuclear projects in the last 30 years.

The plant satisfies the highest standards of safety, security, and transparency and has been delivered in compliance with the UAE’s 2008 policy commitments for the development of nuclear energy.

The Barakah Plant prevents 22.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, which is the same as taking 4.6 million cars off the road annually and helps the country meet 24% of its 2030 decarbonisation targets (Nationally Determined Contributions, or NDCs).

Barakah is yielding extensive economic advantages as well. Abu Dhabi’s natural gas consumption for power generation is at a 13-year low despite rising demand, largely due to the substantial contribution of barakah to the city’s energy mix.

The four APR-1400 units from Barakah are also essential in assisting UAE businesses in their decarbonisation efforts. Barakah powers 85% of the clean energy certificates that EWEC manages, which businesses like ADNOC, EGA, and Emirates Steel Arkan use to produce greener products.
