US Sends Aircraft Carrier USS Nimitz to the Middle East to Strengthen ‘capabilities’ amid the Israel-Iran Confrontation

The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz left Southeast Asia on Monday after cancelling a visit to Vietnam, as the Pentagon announced the deployment of “additional capabilities” to the Middle East as the Iran-Israel tension escalated. According to Marine Traffic, a ship-tracking website, the carrier was passing through the Malacca Strait into the Indian Ocean about 13:45 GMT.

A Vietnamese government official confirmed to AFP that a scheduled welcome onboard the USS Nimitz on June 20, as part of the ship’s projected visit to Danang from June 19 to June 23, had been cancelled.

The official provided a letter from the US embassy informing them that the Defence Department was cancelling the event due to “an emergent operational requirement.” The transfer of one of the world’s largest warships occurred on day four of Israel’s intensifying air conflict with Iran, with no end in sight despite international appeals for de-escalation.

Hours after the US embassy letter, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth declared that the US was increasing its military presence in the Middle East to improve its “defensive posture.” Over this past weekend, I authorised the deployment of further capabilities to the United States Central Command Area of Responsibility,” Hegseth told X.
