Dubai Misdemeanour Court has sentenced a young Arab man to one month in jail, fined him Dh2,500, and ordered his deportation after he was found guilty of stealing his girlfriend’s phone. The case dates back to September 2024, when a woman reported her phone stolen after a dinner at a Dubai Marina restaurant. She said she had gone to the washroom with her sister, leaving their phones on the table. On returning, both women found the phone missing and discovered that the man, who had invited them to dinner to get to know her better, had also left without notice.
The victim’s sister attempted to contact him, but his phone was switched off. Police launched an investigation and reviewed CCTV footage, which showed the suspect taking the phone and leaving the restaurant. He was later arrested and confessed to stealing the device, claiming he was intoxicated at the time and had discarded the phone on his way home.
The court determined that the theft was intentional and that the suspect was fully aware of his actions. The ruling serves as a warning against theft-related crimes in Dubai. Authorities reiterated that strict penalties will be applied to safeguard residents and visitors.
