Shaikha Naseer Al Nowais of UAE is The First Female Head of UN Tourism

Over 160 member states unanimously approved Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais’ appointment as Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) from 2026 to 2029, a historic accomplishment that solidifies the UAE’s standing as a global leader in tourism.

At the UNWTO General Assembly’s 26th session, being held in Riyadh from November 7–11, 2025, she was chosen by unanimous consent of all participating member states, which number over 160. This triumph comes after she was chosen to fill the role by the organization’s Executive Council in May of last year.

Shaikha Al Nowais has successfully completed the nomination, election, and winning processes in compliance with the organization’s procedure, making her the first Emirati and woman to lead the organization since its founding fifty years ago. This accomplishment demonstrates the confidence that the world has in Emiratis’ abilities and their capacity to influence the direction of international travel. It is also an important turning point in the UAE’s continuous efforts to empower and assist women, increasing their representation in global leadership positions.
