10 kg of Gold is Taken From Former PM Hasina’s Bank Lockers by Bangladeshi Authorities

Officials said on Wednesday that anti-corruption police in Bangladesh have confiscated approximately 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of gold, valued at about $1.3 million, from bank lockers belonging to Sheikh Hasina, the country’s former prime minister.

The discovery was revealed after lockers that had been seized in September were opened, according to officials from the National Board of Revenue’s Central Intelligence Cell (CIC). We unlocked the lockers after a court order. We discovered roughly 9.7 kilograms of gold that belonged to the former prime minister,” a top CIC official who wished to remain anonymous told AFP.

According to investigators, Hasina neglected to deposit some of the “Toshakhana,” or gifts she received while in government, to the state treasury as required by law. In addition, the National Board of Revenue is looking into claims of tax evasion and whether Hasina disclosed the discovered gold in her tax returns.

Since Hasina’s administration ended, Bangladesh has seen political unrest, and the upcoming elections in February 2026 have been marred by violence. Hasina was given the death penalty by the International Crimes Tribunal earlier this month for a brutal crackdown on a student-led rebellion.
