Rescuers From Indonesia Discover one Body and the Wreckage of a Missing Airliner

Indonesian authorities said on Sunday that they have located the wreckage of a fisheries surveillance aircraft that went missing in South Sulawesi province, finding debris scattered across the fog-covered slopes of a mountain and recovering the body of one of the 10 people on board.

The Indonesian Air Transport turboprop plane lost contact with air traffic control on Saturday afternoon while flying from Yogyakarta to Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi. The aircraft had been chartered by Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries to carry out aerial fisheries surveillance.

According to officials, a joint search and rescue team discovered what are believed to be major parts of the aircraft, including the fuselage, tail section and windows. The debris was found across several locations around Mount Bulusaraung in the Maros region.

Muhammad Arif Anwar, head of the Makassar search and rescue agency, said the body of one male victim was found on a steep mountain slope near the wreckage, around 200 metres down a ravine. Due to difficult terrain and poor weather conditions, the body is expected to be evacuated on Monday.
