Iran Issues a Finger on Trigger Warning while Trump Declares That it Wants Negotiations

The commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Thursday warned the United States that the force had its “finger on the trigger” following recent mass protests, even as US President Donald Trump said Tehran still appeared willing to engage in talks.

Trump has repeatedly left open the possibility of fresh military action against Iran after Washington backed and joined Israel’s 12-day war in June, which aimed to weaken Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

Iran witnessed nearly two weeks of protests starting in late December, which challenged the clerical leadership under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The demonstrations have since subsided following a heavy crackdown that activists claim left thousands dead and was accompanied by an unprecedented internet shutdown.

In recent days, the likelihood of immediate US military action against Tehran appears to have eased. Both sides have said they are open to diplomacy, although US media reports suggest Trump is still reviewing possible options.
