As a Plane Carrier Departs for The Middle East, the US Says it is Prepared to Work with Iran
A US official has said Washington is ready to work with Iran if Tehran chooses to engage in dialogue. The comment came after the United States confirmed that the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its accompanying vessels are currently deployed in the Middle East to support regional security and stability.
The move comes as the US continues to pressure Iran over its response to nationwide protests that began in late December. The demonstrations were initially triggered by economic difficulties before turning into a broader political movement against the government. Human rights groups estimate that thousands of people were killed during the crackdown.
When asked about the conditions required for talks with Iran, the US official said Tehran was already aware of what Washington expects. US President Donald Trump also said on Thursday that a naval fleet is heading toward Iran, although he expressed hope that it would not need to be used. He repeated his warnings against killing protesters or restarting Iran’s nuclear programme.
Trump had earlier threatened possible intervention if the Iranian authorities continued to use force against demonstrators. However, the protests have since eased. The president said he had been informed that the number of killings had declined and added that he did not believe Iran currently planned to carry out executions.
