The California Highway Patrol verified to Reuters that singer Britney Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on Wednesday night in Ventura County, California. Around 8:48 p.m. on Wednesday, the CHP’s Ventura Communications Center received a complaint of a black BMW driving strangely fast. After a little while, officers found the car and started a traffic stop.
According to CHP, Spears, the only person inside the car, “showed signs of impairment” as a result of using drugs and alcohol together. She also completed a number of field sobriety tests. Late on Wednesday, Spears was taken to the Ventura County Main Jail.
A request for comment from Reuters was not immediately answered by a Spears spokesman.
Spears was charged in 2007 with two misdemeanors: one count of driving without a valid California driver’s license and one count of hit-and-run causing property damage.
After a judge ended a 13-year conservatorship in 2021, which became a cause celebre for supporters and detractors of an arrangement usually intended to safeguard the elderly, Spears regained control over her personal life and finances.
