A $25 Million Mellon Blue Diamond Ring is Sold at a Geneva Auction

The US art collector Bunny Mellon once possessed the 9.51-carat Mellon Blue, a magnificent deep blue diamond that sold for $25.6 million at auction on Tuesday. As part of their Magnificent Jewels sale in Geneva, Switzerland, Christie’s auctioneers sold the diamond.

The jewel, which was estimated to be worth between 16 and 24 million Swiss francs, sold for 20,525,000 at the Hotel des Bergues. The “elite appetite amongst collectors for extraordinary and storied gems” was demonstrated by the price, according to Rahul Kadakia, who oversaw the sale.

The stone, which is set in a serpentine ring, was formerly owned by US horticulturist, philanthropist, and art collector Rachel Lambert Mellon, popularly known as Bunny Mellon. Max Fawcett, head of jewelry at Christie’s in Geneva, stated, “The Mellon Blue is an exceptional stone.”

More than that, though, it has come to represent a way of life from a bygone era that was only achievable with wealth from the Gilded Age. The brilliant-cut stone has an interior flawless rating. The diamond was last seen in public in 2014, when it was sold for more than $32 million at a New York sale following her death at the age of 103.
