A day after a Palestinian organization returned the remains of two captives to Israel, Red Cross and hospital officials in Gaza said on Friday that Israel had turned over the bodies of thirty Palestinians.
Despite Israeli bombings on Gaza this week that killed over 100 people after an Israeli soldier was killed, the exchange was the most recent sign that the tense Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement is progressing.
The chief of Nasser Hospital’s pediatric unit, Ahmed Al Farra, told The Associated Press Friday morning that Israel had sent 30 Palestinians’ unidentified remains to the hospital. Images displayed the remains inside the Nasser Hospital grounds, lined up in white body bags. Without DNA testing, health officials have found it difficult to identify bodies.
Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that just 75 of the 225 Palestinian dead that Israel has returned have been identified by their relatives. They may have been recovered from Gaza by forces during the conflict, or they may have perished in Israeli custody as captives, or they may have been murdered in Israel during the October 7, 2023, attack that started the conflict.
