Al Sharaa Will be The First President of Syria to Visit the White House

Ahmad Al Sharaa joined Al Qaeda terrorists fighting against American forces in Iraq twenty years ago and was detained in a US-run detention facility. It was unlikely that he would become the first president of Syria to travel to Washington since the country’s independence in 1946.

Al Sharaa, who severed ties with Al Qaeda years prior, has launched a largely successful charm offensive to forge new connections with nations that had rejected Assad’s government after its violent suppression of demonstrators in 2011 turned into a 14-year civil war since rebel forces led by him overthrew former Syrian president Bashar Assad last December.

When Al Sharaa and US President Donald Trump met in Saudi Arabia in May, Trump declared he would remove decades’ worth of sanctions. On Monday, the two leaders will reunite in Washington, where it is widely anticipated that Syria will formally join the coalition led by the United States against Daesh.

Syrian official media reported that Al Sharaa landed in the US on Saturday before to the meeting. Al Sharaa will use the visit to advocate for the complete lifting of the remaining sanctions placed on his nation in addition to that accord.
