What led to the accident of an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that claimed 260 lives? After six months, pilots, the airline, and the manufacturer are still at odds because investigators have not yet produced definitive answers.
One month after the jet erupted into flames shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad in western India on June 12, as required by international law, India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released a preliminary report.
The fuel supply switches for both engines were switched to the “off” position nearly simultaneously shortly after takeoff, according to the AAIB assessment released on July 12. One of the pilots may be heard questioning the other why he cut off the gasoline supply in the voice recording of the cockpit. According to the report, the other pilot replied that he did not do so.
At that point, the plane started to lose altitude. The report also mentions the automatic deployment of an auxiliary power unit designed to supply electricity to the aircraft in the case of an engine failure.
