Arab and Muslim leaders have called for a comprehensive review of their relations with Israel following emergency talks in Doha on Monday. The meeting came in response to last week’s deadly Israeli strike targeting Hamas members in Qatar’s capital.
The joint session of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which brought together nearly 60 countries, aimed to take decisive action after the attack on Hamas officials hosted in Qatar while they were discussing a Gaza ceasefire proposal.
In a joint statement, the summit urged all states to take “all possible legal and effective measures” to prevent Israel from continuing its aggression against the Palestinian people. This includes reviewing diplomatic and economic ties with Israel and pursuing legal proceedings against it. The statement also called for coordinated efforts to suspend Israel’s membership in the United Nations.
Among the participating states were Qatar’s Gulf neighbours, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco, all of which recognise Israel. However, the leaders of the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco, who signed the Abraham Accords recognizing Israel five years ago to the day, did not attend the talks in person, sending senior representatives instead.
