As a 5.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan, Kabul Trembles

Reporters and locals said that a powerful earthquake shook eastern Afghanistan, including the capital Kabul, on Friday.According to the US Geological Survey, the 5.8-magnitude earthquake occurred in a hilly region about 130 kilometres (80 miles) northeast of Kabul.

At 5:39 p.m. (1309 GMT), the epicentre, which was close to a number of isolated communities, struck as the nation’s Muslim majority was breaking their Ramadan fast. A strong earthquake rocked us as we waited to eat our iftars. Zilgay Talabi, a resident of Khenj district, which is close to the epicentre, described it as “very strong and lasting almost 30 seconds.”Talabi told the reporters, Everyone was appalled and terrified,” and he expressed his concern that “landslides and avalanches” would ensue.

Parts of the city saw a brief power outage, while an AFP correspondent in Nangarhar province east of Kabul also experienced it. Afghanistan frequently experiences earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies at the junction of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

The Panjshir province police spokesperson, Haqmal Saad, called the earthquake “very strong” and stated that the agency was “gathering information on the ground.” The chairman of the Panjshir Natural Disaster Management agency, Mohibullah Jahid, told the media that he was in contact with several local officials.
