Heavy rains sparked concerns about a recurrence of the deadly floods that ravaged the Mediterranean region last year, prompting the closure of schools throughout Valencia in eastern Spain on Monday.
In Aldaia, one of the places most severely affected by the October 2024 disaster that claimed over 230 lives, overnight downpours prompted localized floods and a ravine to overflow. There were no reported injuries.
Because of what transpired, there is some panic. In Aldaia, 64-year-old retiree Jose Luis Ruiz told reporters, “People are really afraid.” Everybody repositioned their vehicles beyond the area. Outside our homes, we erect barriers. We didn’t get much sleep that night. Due to the closure of 243 local councils in the area, over half a million Valencia pupils were not in class on Monday.
According to local officials, Valencia, the regional capital, also closed all public areas, including parks, libraries, marketplaces, and cemeteries. Due to the possibility of heavy rain, the national meteorological service AEMET issued the highest red alert for Valencia province’s coastal districts on Monday. According to the report, these regions might receive up to 180 millimeters of precipitation over the course of 12 hours, and perhaps even in a few hours.
