As Iran Promises a Harsh Response, Trump Says that “Time is Running Out
President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that time is running out for Iran to enter negotiations and avoid possible US military action, prompting a sharp response from Tehran, which said it would retaliate against any attack “like never before”.
Trump has not ruled out the use of force following this month’s deadly crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran. Last June, the United States carried out overnight strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities during Israel’s 12-day conflict with the Islamic Republic.
A US naval strike group, described by Trump as an “armada” and led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, is currently operating in Middle East waters. A human rights group said it has verified more than 6,200 deaths, most of them protesters killed by security forces, during demonstrations that began in late December and peaked on January 8 and 9. Activists warn the real death toll could be significantly higher, with an ongoing internet shutdown making it difficult to confirm information.
Trump did not directly reference the protests but urged Iran to negotiate over its nuclear programme, which Western governments believe is intended to develop nuclear weapons. Hopefully Iran will quickly come to the table and negotiate a fair and equitable deal, no nuclear weapons, one that is good for all parties. Time is running out, it is truly of the essence,” Trump wrote.
