As Typhoon Kajiki Gets Stronger, Vietnam Evacuates More than 586,000 People

In preparation for Typhoon Kajiki’s intensification, Vietnam declared preparations to evacuate almost half a million people and instructed boats to remain ashore, while the southern Chinese city of Sanya shut down its businesses and public transportation on Sunday.
According to China’s National Meteorological Center, the storm is expected to “brush past” the southern shore of the island state of Hainan starting Sunday night before moving on toward Vietnam.
As of 0900 GMT, Vietnam’s national weather forecast office reported that the storm had intensified, with winds of up to 166 kph (103 mph). According to China’s weather forecaster, it is expected to get stronger still, with wind gusts reaching 180 kph.
More than 586,000 people are to be evacuated from the central Vietnamese provinces of Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Hue, and Danang, where the typhoon is expected to make landfall early on Monday, according to official media.
According to the authorities, military are ready to assist and anybody in the anticipated path should avoid going outside after 1400 GMT on Sunday.
