A surge of Western actions to defy Israel in making the historic, if symbolic, move came after French President Emmanuel Macron formally recognized a Palestinian state at the UN on Monday.
Macron demanded an end to the war in Gaza while attending a summit that was not attended by Israel or its leading supporter, the United States. Macron stated in a General Assembly speech that “the time for peace has come, because we are just moments away from no longer being able to seize it. The 48 hostages that Hamas has taken must now be released. The war, the shelling of Gaza, the massacres, and the displacement must end now.
He received a standing ovation from the Palestinian Authority, which praised France’s “historic and courageous” action. To put more pressure on Israel as it escalates its attack in Gaza, Australia, Britain, Canada, and Portugal also recognized a Palestinian state. Following that three-quarters of the UN membership recognized Monaco, Belgium, Andorra, Malta, and Luxembourg from the General Assembly podium.
