Juliette Binoche, who won an Oscar and was the president of the Cannes film festival jury last year, says it’s easy to see why the films that did well on the Croisette also do well in Hollywood. And it’s not because changes were made to make the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ voting members more diverse.
In an interview in Los Angeles, Binoche observed, “The strength of these films leads to their success.” The Cannes jury made some really smart picks, because the films that premiered there got a total of 19 Oscar nominations.
Sentimental Value,” a Norwegian family drama that won the Grand Prix, and “The Secret Agent,” a Brazilian thriller, are also up for best picture. The Palme d’Or winner “It Was Just An Accident” and the road trip movie “Sirat,” which won a special jury prize, will fight alongside those two films for the title of best foreign picture.
Binoche stated, It’s because these films are so beautiful, so different, and so strong that they sometimes go against the grain. It’s not hard to tell which films are strong,” remarked the 61-year-old actress, who has won awards at the Venice, Berlin, and Cannes film festivals in addition to her Academy Award for “The English Patient.
