Mediators said Tuesday that the United States and Yemen’s Houthis had reached a ceasefire agreement that would guarantee “freedom of navigation” in the Red Sea, where the Iran-backed rebels have been attacking ships for months.
The deal comes after President Donald Trump, who did not specifically address recent attacks on partner Israel, declared that the United States would cease attacking the Houthis after the rebels agreed to stop harassing ships.
He said that neither side will target the other, “ensuring freedom of navigation and the smooth flow of international commercial shipping” in the Red Sea. According to an AFP count of Houthi deaths, Trump claimed at the White House that the rebels had “capitulated” following a seven-week US air campaign that claimed 300 lives. Although he did not comment on the agreement, Mahdi Al Mashat, the political head of the rebels, pledged a “painful” reaction to Israeli attacks that killed people in reprisal for missile firing at Israel’s main airport.
