A bitcoin investor who purchased a SpaceX flight for himself and three polar explorers took off on Monday night in the first rocket journey to transport humans over the North and South poles. Chun Wang, a Chinese-born entrepreneur, launched into orbit from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre.
SpaceX’s Falcon rocket sailed southward over the Atlantic, taking the space passengers on a route never attempted before in 64 years of human spaceflight. Wang declined to disclose the amount he paid Elon Musk’s SpaceX for the 3 ½-day ultimate polar expedition.
The first leg of their flight, from Florida to the South Pole, took only a half hour. From a goal height of 270 miles (440 kilometres), their fully autonomous capsule will circle the globe in approximately 1 ½ hours, including 46 minutes for flying from pole to pole.
