Britain Has Announced the Biggest Change to its Asylum Policy in Recent Memory

Britain announced on Saturday plans for its most sweeping reform of asylum policy in modern history, drawing inspiration from Denmark’s strict model that has faced sharp criticism from human rights groups.

The Labour government has been tightening its stance on immigration, particularly targeting illegal small-boat crossings from France, as it looks to curb the rising influence of the populist Reform UK party, which has pushed migration to the forefront of national debate.

According to the Home Office, the overhaul will revoke the statutory duty to provide certain forms of support, such as housing and weekly allowances, to specific categories of asylum seekers. The new measures will apply to those who are able to work but choose not to, as well as to individuals who break the law. The department, headed by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, said taxpayer-funded assistance will instead be directed toward asylum seekers who actively contribute to the economy and local communities.

Further details of the proposed measures are expected on Monday. The Home Office says the reforms aim to make the UK less appealing to illegal migrants and streamline processes for their removal.
