Power Cuts and Transport Chaos are Caused by Snowstorms in Northern Europe

On Friday, gale-force winds and storms swept through northern Europe, killing more people, causing chaos on the roads, closing schools, and cutting electricity to hundreds of thousands of people in bitterly cold temperatures.

Thousands of people were impacted by the cancellation of about fifty flights at London’s Heathrow Airport. From the Czech Republic to Moscow, more than 300 flights were canceled at four airports that serve the Russian capital, causing disruptions to air travel throughout Europe.

As they issued weather warnings, including the rare highest-level red wind alert for the British Isles in Scilly and Cornwall in southwest England, forecasters from Britain to Germany advised people to stay indoors.

In Buxton, following the arrival of Storm Goretti amid a week of extreme cold, a toddler sleeps on a sledge while his mother snaps a selfie. Reuters The National Grid electricity supplier reported that around 50,000 houses in England and Wales, the majority of which were in southwest England, were still without power on Friday afternoon.

Overnight, parts of the country experienced severe winds and heavy snow due to Storm Goretti. Over 250 schools in Scotland were closed due to severe weather that plagued the country for most of the first week after the Christmas holiday.
