After the Deadliest Fire in Decades, Hong Kong Welcomes 2026 Without Fireworks

Following a terrible fire in November that claimed at least 161 lives, the region welcomed 2026 without spectacular and brilliant explosions in the sky over its famous Victoria Harbor. Instead, on Wednesday night, the city’s tourism board held a musical performance in Central, a business sector that is also home to the well-known nightlife hotspot Lan Kwai Fong, including soft rock duet Air Supply and other vocalists. At midnight, eight landmarks’ facades were transformed into enormous countdown clocks that displayed a three-minute light spectacular.

The city has long celebrated National Day, the Lunar New Year, and the New Year with fireworks. Hundreds of thousands of people, including many visitors, are usually drawn to both sides of the promenade by the pyrotechnic displays against Hong Kong’s iconic skyline of skyscrapers. The territory’s secretary for culture, sports, and tourism, Rosanna Law, admitted on Tuesday that the absence of pyrotechnics might impact some hotel and restaurant establishments.

Shanghai tourist Annie Wang stated that even though she had intended to attend the fireworks display, she could understand the city’s decision because she found the news of the fire to be heartbreaking.
