Del Toro Unveils his Take on Frankenstein at Venice

Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro unveiled his long-awaited Frankenstein at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, presenting his latest monster to the world with a mix of pride and humor. The director joked that completing the big-budget project left him feeling drained, calling it a kind of “post-partum depression.”

Del Toro’s last creature to premiere in Venice, the amphibious being from The Shape of Water, won the festival’s top honour in 2017 before sweeping the Oscars. His new film, a sweeping reimagining of Mary Shelley’s classic, is also competing for the Golden Lion among 21 contenders this year.

I’ve been chasing this creature since I was a child,” Del Toro told reporters, explaining that he waited decades to bring the story to life on a scale that matched his vision. The premiere fittingly took place on August 30, known as Frankenstein Day, celebrating author Mary Shelley’s birthday.

Starring Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Creature, the Gothic epic delves into obsession, vengeance, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. While The Hollywood Reporter praised it as an emotionally powerful take on Shelley’s tale, Variety offered a harsher view, noting its immense budget but dismissing its look as “made for TV.
