An Intimate Documentary Featuring Marlee Matlin’s Tale

Shoshanna Stern was the only person Marlee Matlin had in mind to direct the documentary when American Masters approached her about it. Stern shares Matlin’s deafness. She had never directed before, too. However, Matlin, who only a few years ago became the first deaf person in the Directors Guild of America, was certain she could handle the challenge.

The resultant movie, “Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore,” offers a close-up look at her life: She was raised in a hearing household and won the Oscar for best actress at the age of 21 for her debut performance in “Children of a Lesser God,” which movie critic Rex Reed referred to at the time as a “pity vote.

It’s also a moving window into the life of the deaf, emphasising visual communication and American Sign Language (ASL) through innovative methods and sound design. The movie premieres in a few theatres on Friday.

Even though Matlin detailed a lot of her experience in her memoir “I’ll Scream Later,” it wasn’t entirely fulfilling on some way. The media did not fully take the #MeToo movement’s allegations seriously before it. However, a documentary also offered a chance.

She stated, “We communicate visually.” Matlin and Stern discussed the “CODA” impact, creating the documentary on their terms, and why they hope Reed watches this movie with The Associated Press through translators.
