Due to the record-long government shutdown, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an unusual order on Friday morning to reduce flights countrywide. As a result, some travelers were rushing to find alternate routes.
According to the order, the 40 airports chosen by the FAA are spread across more than 20 states and include hubs like Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Numerous airports in various major cities, such as New York, Houston, Chicago, and Washington, are being affected, and smaller airports may also be affected.
Greenwich, Connecticut resident Karen Soika informed her Uber driver that she needed to arrive at Newark Airport quickly in order to catch her flight to Utah for a weekend getaway. She had just found out that it had been rescheduled for an hour earlier. However, she then discovered that her jet was actually departing from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, which was at least an hour away.
In anticipation of the FAA’s formal directive, airlines hurried to modify their schedules and started canceling flights on Thursday, while passengers anxiously awaited word on whether their flights would depart on time.
