EGA Plans to More Than Double Germany’s Capability for Recycling Aluminum

The new facility, located near Hannover, will provide 110 thousand tonnes of scrap-sorting capacity annually and 153 thousand tonnes of melting and casting capacity annually, more than doubling EGA Leichtmetall’s recycling capacity.

The first hot metal is expected in 2028, and the project will require approximately $170 million in investment. The current Hannover location of EGA Leichtmetall has an annual melting and casting capacity of about 30,000 tons.

The proposed new plant will be one of the first in the world to incorporate an integrated salt recovery process, cutting-edge furnace technology, and a state-of-the-art scrap sorting system in one place. Additionally, EGA runs EGA Spectro Alloys in Minnesota, where the first stage of an expansion with comparable sorting technologies was just finished. The EGA Spectro Alloys mill is now in a second phase, which will increase its annual capacity to 200,000 tonnes by 2027. EGA has almost finished building the biggest aluminum recycling facility in the United Arab Emirates.

EGA ships more than 600,000 tonnes of primary aluminium to Europe each year, making it a major supplier. The major market for EGA’s CelestiAL solar aluminum is the European car sector.
