Europe Unites in Oppose to Trump’s Threats About Greenland
European leaders delivered a united message on Tuesday, firmly rejecting any US attempt to take control of Greenland and warning Washington of serious consequences, even as US President Donald Trump signalled openness to talks at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Meeting at the annual gathe
ring in the Swiss Alps, European leaders pushed back against Trump’s increasingly assertive America First stance. Greenland’s prime minister added to the tension by saying the island’s small population of around 57,000 must be prepared for all scenarios, including the possibility of military force.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen led the response, cautioning that Trump’s approach risked driving relations between the United States and the European Union into what she described as a dangerous downward spiral. She warned that threats and tariffs would only weaken transatlantic ties and benefit shared adversaries.
French President Emmanuel Macron echoed the concerns, criticising what he called attempts to subordinate Europe. He also described as unacceptable Trump’s threat to impose tariffs of up to 25 percent on countries opposing his plans for Greenland.
