ICE Raids Threaten to Stall US Manufacturing Growth

The White House has touted enormous investment promises from foreign nations as proof that its global tariff strategy is benefiting Americans. However, turning these pledges into actual manufacturing facilities is proving to be a greater challenge.

A massive immigration raid at a South Korean battery plant in Georgia on September 4 illustrates this difficulty. Just ten days prior, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung visited Washington to finalise a trade deal that included a $350 billion fund to support Korean companies expanding in the US, especially in batteries, shipbuilding, and autos. Korean private firms also pledged an additional $150 billion.

Yet, images of hundreds of Korean workers being detained for suspected visa violations generated sharp backlash. Although many workers were involved in legally authorized temporary roles such as installing and testing advanced equipment, the raid delayed construction by several months. Other Korean employees working on US projects have been restricted or recalled, and some are hesitant to accept future US assignments. President Lee warned that the raid could significantly impact future Korean investment in the country. Such indiscriminate immigration enforcement, combined with harsh treatment and public humiliation of detainees, discourages foreign workers and companies from investing in the US.
