In South Asia, Fast Fashion Clothing Piles up Alongside Military Planes

Three manufacturers claim that as a result of the Middle East war forcing airlines like Emirates and Qatar Airways to delay flights, shipments of apparel for Zara owner Inditex and other big clothing shops are stuck at airports in Bangladesh and India.

South Asia is a major hub for the production of clothing, and fast fashion companies worldwide depend on factories in Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan to supply them with an endless supply of fresh T-shirts, skirts, and jeans.

According to Shovon Islam, managing director of Sparrow Group, a manufacturer whose European clients include Inditex, M&S, Next, and Primark, “some of my apparel consignments are currently stuck at Dhaka airport.”

They were meant to be transported to the UK via Dubai, but we are currently in a very challenging situation because operations at Dubai airport have been suspended. None of the alternate methods we’re attempting to identify are easy or economical,” Islam continued.

Since the battle started last Saturday, the majority of Middle Eastern airspace has remained restricted, forcing Dubai, the busiest airport in the world, to shutdown for several days and causing many flights to be canceled by airlines including Etihad, Emirates, and Qatar Airways.
