The New York Times reported on Saturday that Indian authorities have stated that they will continue to buy oil from Russia in spite of the fines that U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to implement. Requests for response from the White House, India’s Ministry of External Affairs, and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas were not immediately answered.
Trump said last month in a post on Truth Social that India will be subject to further sanctions for buying Russian energy and weapons. He subsequently stated, however, that he was unconcerned about India’s actions against Russia. Trump informed reporters on Friday that India will no longer purchase oil from Russia.
The NYT piece cited two senior Indian officials who stated that there had been no change in policy, while another official claimed that the government had “not given any direction to oil companies” to reduce Russian imports. As the July discounts dwindled, Reuters had previously reported that Indian state refiners had ceased purchasing Russian oil within the last week.
Unless Moscow strikes a significant peace agreement with Ukraine, Trump threatens to impose 100% taxes on nations that purchase Russian oil on July 14. Russia accounts for around 35% of India’s total supply, making it the country’s largest supplier.
