Following the bloodiest mass shooting in decades, which police denounced as antisemitic “terrorism” after assailants killed 15 people at a Jewish holiday on Bondi Beach, Australian officials decided on Monday to tighten gun regulations. Among the dead were a local rabbi, a Holocaust survivor, and a 10-year-old girl. Forty-two others were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds and various injuries.
On Monday night, as mourners gathered to honor the victims and commemorate the second day of Hanukkah, a temporary flower monument near to Bondi Beach grew in size. Hundreds of mourners, including Jews, held each other, clapped, and sung songs.
At the Bondi Pavilion, New South Wales Prime Minister Chris Minns (R) and other dignitaries lay flowers in remembrance of the deaths. In response, Australian state and territory leaders met with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday and decided “to strengthen gun laws across the nation.”
According to Albanese’s office, they have decided to investigate ways to enhance background checks for gun owners, prohibit foreigners from obtaining gun licenses, and restrict the kinds of weapons that are permitted.
