India Promised to Reduce US Products Tariffs to Zero: Trump

US President Donald Trump said Monday that India has offered to reduce tariffs on American goods to zero, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi projected unity with Chinese and Russian leaders amid growing trade tensions with Washington.

Calling the US-India trade relationship “one-sided,” Trump wrote on Truth Social: They have now offered to cut their Tariffs to nothing, but it’s getting late. They should have done so years ago.” The Indian Embassy in Washington did not immediately comment.

Trump’s remarks come against the backdrop of tariffs as high as 50% on Indian goods, raising questions about the future of bilateral trade ties. His comments coincided with Modi’s participation in a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China, where leaders from more than 20 non-Western nations gathered.

At the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping promoted his vision for a new global security and economic order centered on the “Global South,” positioning it as an alternative to US-led systems. Images of Modi walking hand-in-hand with Russian President Vladimir Putin before joining Xi underscored Beijing’s efforts to strengthen ties with New Delhi.
