Some tourists from the United Arab Emirates are rethinking their summer vacation plans as severe heatwaves continue to ravage portions of Europe. Previously well-liked havens from the Gulf’s heat, southern France, Italy, and Spain are now facing comparable, or often worse, temperatures during the busiest tourism months. As an early summer heatwave swept across Europe on Monday, firefighters battled flames in France and Turkey, evacuating over 50,000 people.
France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Germany all issued health advisories. Even the Netherlands, which is accustomed to a gentler climate, warned of high temperatures and high humidity in the days ahead.
One Emirati who altered their plans is 34-year-old Fatima Al Nuaimi from Al Ain. For many years, spending two to three weeks in southern Europe typically divided between France and Italy—was a summertime ritual for her family.
“I checked the weather in June and July of this year, and it was already over 35 degrees. We didn’t want to spend the entire day indoors,” she said.”I was particularly worried about my two young children,” Fatima stated. There isn’t much you can do with children when it’s that hot. There are few outdoor activities, and sightseeing becomes taxing. That negates the trip’s goal.
