Israel had put in place “tactical pauses” in Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, and Muwasi, where many displaced people are staying. But the pauses have now been suspended as Israel prepares to expand its military operation in Gaza City. This comes just days after Israel carried out strikes in key neighbourhoods and called up tens of thousands of reservists.
The Israeli army did not say if it informed residents or aid groups before deciding to resume daytime fighting. Israel has long described Gaza City as a Hamas stronghold, saying the group still uses a tunnel network there. The city also contains major infrastructure and hospitals. The United Nations warned on Thursday that Gaza could lose half of its hospital beds if Israel goes ahead with its planned invasion.
The pause suspension also comes a week after the world’s top food security authority said Gaza City is experiencing famine. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) explained that months of fighting, the blockade restricting aid, displacement, and the collapse of food production have left people starving. Their report said hunger and child malnutrition had reached famine levels.
