As thousands of protesters took to the streets in response to President Donald Trump’s unprecedented use of the National Guard, tensions in Los Angeles increased on Sunday. Law enforcement used tear gas, rubber bullets and flash bangs to keep the crowd under control while also blocking off a major freeway and setting self-driving cars on fire. As night struck and authorities proclaimed an unlawful gathering, many protestors dispersed, allowing cops to go in and arrest others who refused to leave.
Others tossed fireworks, rocks, concrete pieces and electric scooters at California Highway Patrol officers and their cars parked on the stopped southbound 101 Freeway, while some of the remaining individuals flung things at police from behind a homemade barrier that covered an entire street. Officers sought shelter by running beneath a flyover.
Several blocks of downtown Los Angeles, a metropolis with a population of 4 million, served as the focal point of Sunday’s protests. The entrance of some 300 Guard members sparked rage and anxiety among many locals, making it the third and most intense day of protests against Trump’s immigration crackdown in the area.
